I imagine the same could be said for my PS2 discs. I am only guessing here, but would it not be possible for the combination of extended use and the heat (not likely to have dropped below the mid-70's during the night) to have caused some sort of damage to the laser that reads the aforementioned type(s) of discs? Some part of my brain thinks this is a reasonable assumption, but then numerous people participate in marathon gaming sessions, with few if any breaks, so I'd think the PS2 could hold up to such things.ĪRGH! - View image here: - View image here: - View image here: - View image here: - View image here: -Ĭan anyone confirm or deny the possibility of my theory as to the cause of this damage? Has anyone else experienced the same problem? I know that my DVD's still work fine, as I can read view them on my laptop, and I have even lent some to friends since this happened. As with other games, I believe War of the Monsters occasionally accesses the disc when left on the main screen, so there would have been a degree of activity even thoughout the night. I imagine the PS2 was on for at least 18 hours straight, during a large part of which time it was in use for gameplay.
Normally I would put the system to sleep, but instead it remained on with the game disc inserted. The night before I discovered that the PS2 was dead, my girlfriend had been playing for a while during the evening, and I didn't notice that she'd left the system on when she finished for the night.
The only cause for this that I can come up with, and this is a real long shot, to be honest, is that the PS2 was being used extensively during one of the hotter spells we've had here in Boston this past summer. However, when I insert either a PSone game or audio CD, it is read almost instantly and an icon is presented in the system browser. Unfortunately, generally nothing further comes of this, with the exception of some infrequent error message stating that the disc can't be read. In the system browser, when I attempt to load either a PS2 or DVD disc, I am greeted with an endless display of "Reading disc." while the system whirs away, as if searching for something readable across the entire surface of the disc. I say suddenly because one day my girlfriend and I were happily playing War of the Monsters (somewhat obsessively), and the next we were unable to play PS2 games or view DVD's. A couple of weeks ago my PS2 suddenly stopped reading PS2 and DVD discs.
